A study by Gregory Watson and Frederick Eggers, "Rental Market Dynamics: Is Affordable Housing for the Poor an Endangered Species?" analyzes rental market data between 1995 and 1999 in six metropolitan areas: Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Northern New Jersey. The authors track the sources of new rental housing, the reasons for its loss and changes in affordability of the existing rental housing stock.

Strategic Restructuring for Nonprofit Organizations: Mergers, Integrations, and Alliances, by Amelia Kohm and David La Piana is based on the largest study to date of nonprofit consolidations. It finds that nonprofit organizations are responding to tightening budgets in a variety of innovative ways, including partial and full-scale mergers, but sometimes at the cost of time and staff morale. The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s latest report, America’s Neighbors: The Affordable Housing Crisis and the People it Affects, finds that 95 million people in the US have housing problems, nearly 65 million (24 percent of the population) of whom are low income. The report compares the number of those affected by housing problems to data noting the number of those affected by food insecurity and lack of healthcare. www.nlihc.org.

Awards

The Building and Social Housing Foundation is seeking projects for its 2004 Annual World Habitat Awards. Project focus should be on sustainable futures for residents and provide practical, imaginative solutions to current housing problems. Deadline: June 1. www.bshf.org.

Organizations will receive equipment and hardware to create a functioning network as well as a free one-year technical support contract. The Draper Richards Foundation provides $100,000 a year for three years to social entrepreneurs interested in starting nonprofit organizations whose projects will demonstrate innovative ways to solve existing social problems. The Public Welfare Foundation makes grants in the areas of community and economic development, criminal justice, disadvantaged elderly and youth, environment, health, human rights, population and technology assistance. Grants range from $25,000 to $50,000. Open deadline. www.publicwelfare.org.
